The main focus of Major 1.3 is to introduce you to the notion that you, as graphic designers, design for the “other”. The “other” in this instance is the user (or public). This includes individuals and groups who do not necessarily share all your traits, tastes, opinions or needs. As designers, you make work that others will engage and interact with in varying ways. Your design has influence in how others gain and process information, how they move through a real (a building, a city, a landscape) or a figurative space (think of navigating books), how they understand a (complex) system, how they engage with ideas and so much more. For your design to work in the way you planned or envisaged, it’s crucial to gain an understanding of the user for whom your design is intended. Knowing who you are designing for, informs your design choices.

You will be exploring this notion of designing for the other through the lens of the following perspectives:

1: System & Communication – Yin Yin Wong
2: System Interface User – Gabrielle Marks, Brigit Lichtenegger, Arjen Suijker

2a : Interface? Yes interface!/Gabrielle
2b : The digital interface Brigit/Interaction Station
2c: The user interface Arjen/Publication Station
3: System of Representation – Mark Mulder
